What is a birth doula?
As an independent birth doula (also sometimes referred to as a “labor doula”), I am an additional professional member of the birth team, hired directly by the expectant parents.
Birth doulas do not perform medical tasks, but instead can provide emotional, informational/educational, and physical support during pregnancy, labor and birth, and the early postpartum recovery time.
For my birth doula clients, this can mean meeting with you and your spouse/partner during your pregnancy to assist you in preparing a birth plan, explaining and practicing labor positions and comfort measures, discussing your plans for after your baby arrives, or simply listening. I then provide in-person support during labor, birth, and the first few hours postpartum, along with a follow-up meeting a few days later.
